School holidays came to an end and a new school term began in Germany. Starting school for the first time can be daunting, so first graders in Germany are given a ‘school cone’ (Schultüte), a kind of decorated cardboard cornucopia, filled with surprises – everything from chocolate and small toys to school supplies, to help them ease in to their new routine. It’s a way of sweetening their ‘Einschulung’ (first day of school). Do you remember your first day?
